The Eve of Leg 1

It was the night before the Targa started, and we had a loose/bad wheel bearing. I didn't repack the bearing when I tightened it before the Prologues. I was busy, so the rest of the Baldhead team answered questions with a curious public. I wish I had had the time to chat with more people.

Moving faster than the camera, :-), I removed the brakes to access the wheel bearings. Rick Bye, who raced 944's in the IMSA Firehawk series, was at the Targa representing Porsche. His verdict? The bearings are fine, run them loose, let them make some noise when they're cold because they don't like heat if they're tight. (They rattled on the first transit, in rainy cold weather.) We were still in the rally! This would not be the first time Rick saves us.

Unfortunately, we weren't the only ones with difficulties. Our category competition couldn't get their engine to run quite right. Note engine unlike any other Toyota Celica's.

Meanwhile, outside, there was a cruise ship ...
