Demonstration Day

The Confederation Building. We were going to rally around it.

We got these cool license plates. Cool car, too!

Parked beside us, Buckingham/Richardson's extensive Targa Tasmania experience meant they didn't have to "demonstrate driving ability" today (like we had to). Thus, they could afford to relax and have fun.

Lots of people showed up to look at the cars.

Hobnobbing with the rich and famous. Multiple Canadian and North American champion Mark Williams' Subaru factory Nomex looks a bit out of place in his vintage rally Falcon, but no more than the satellite telephones his team uses - thanks to sponsor Globalcom. We had FRS radios - they were great for car-to-car communication coming down.

Driver's Meeting! KIA was the only manufacturer to enter the Targa Newfoundland performance rallies. (Porsche entered the Targa Newfoundland Trials.) The lack of rain hurt the KIA's chances. Ross Wood (in center in red with back to camera) announced at the meeting that Jim and I (and anyone else who didn't have a National-level competition license) would have to do six runs each to qualify to drive in the Targa.

The fated Grant/Bartlett Celica in line to take their first run. Ralph Grant missed getting his Volvo on the container ship in Australia by minutes. Undaunted, he and his wife rented an old full-out rally car, the 1982 Canadian championship car of Canadian rally legend Taisto Heinonen. This car was our competition for the category win. Although prepped by the Sprongls', the car had not been run in anger for a long time. Unfortunately, in a five-day event, old, unused stuff tends to break.
