First Night Car Show at Mile One

There's a car show going on! We were nowhere in sight, scrambling to register, putting the trailer away, getting the car ready, and getting scrutineered

The Last Ditch Racing Cassidy/Carrick Subaru Impreza. This SCCA ProRally car had carried Cassidy and his regular co-driver to "Top American Finisher" at the Rallye Defi Sainte-Agathe in Quebec just a week before the Targa. This meant he had won free entry to the Targa Newfoundland. Unable to secure his regular crew or co-driver on such short notice, John showed up alone at the ferry dock in North Sydney. Steve Carrick had come down with us, with the intention of serving as an official. He was pressed into service as Steve's navigator, and zeroed the rally. For the 2003 Targa Newfoundland, Ottawa resident Steve will navigate the Baldhead Racing 944S2. TN02 944S2 co-driver Jim Morrow will be driving in TN03 in the Baldhead Racing CARS P4-class Subaru Impreza RS 2.5 rally car with his wife, Jean MacGillivray, co-driving.

The fated Salter/Paterson Healey Silverstone. This exceedingly-rare factory special racer was awesome - back in 1955 and today. This example was restored to concours-capable condition. A true classic.

Interior of the Salter/Paterson Healey. The large white dial was used so the driver doesn't have to repeatedly ask the direction and intensity of the upcoming corner, aiding the navigator's concentration. Interesting idea, borrowed from Don Barrow's Routecheck.

The Buckingham/Richardson 1965 911. One of six Australian crews entered, it was a Targa Tasmania veteran. The "HIS" refers to his wife's 356 entry, labelled "HERS."

Isn't this gorgeous? Pre-war supercharged Italian in-line six. It could only be the all-conquering Alfa Gran Prix motor.

The Lawson/Lawson Alfa-Romeo Mille Miglia Spyder from Australia. Constructed by the factory for the famous Mille Miglia (1000 mile) road race, it was essentially an Alfa Gran Prix car with the body widened to accommodate a riding mechanic/navigator.

This car was everyone's favourite.

Datsun Z-cars have been a threat in motorsports since a Hino racer in California started Brock Racing Enterprises and won everything. (Peter Brock also designed my favourite car, the Cobra Daytona Coupe.) Jack MacDonnell and Carson Rasmussen's JRP 280Z carries the famous BRE Datsun factory team colour scheme.

The fated Saxby/Rees 993 turbo. Once I saw this car and crew, I knew they would be a threat for the overall win. All-wheel-drive Porsches are the perfect vehicle for Targa Newfoundland. While there were other capable cars, when it rains, nothing beats all-wheel-drive. They were also so prepared they had secured local sponsorship! Meanwhile, we were still putting decals on the car ...
